It’s Inevitable, You Have to Work Together

Group work never ends. It’s a fact of life. Whether its working on that report with the girl that sits next to you in 5th grade or working on a project for a company with your group, collaborating with others in inevitable. In any school environment it’s a standard that is followed. While working with others is a school thing, when you hit college most students think that “oh I’m in the real world now.” After all, college is a lot different than high school. But working together is always constant, you should never expect that group work ends.

Any occupation that you go into will involve group work. It’s expected and saying that it ends after school is foolish. Thus since working together is inevitable, you need to learn how to connect with others. To say that you hate working with others is to say that you are not flexible and in any workplace you need to be flexible.

It is agreed upon by most experts that working together provides a better accomplishment in the work place. When working together you need to Choose Participants Carefully, Remove Quiet Politeness, Establish Communication Protocols, Use a Specific Ideation Process, Give Requirement and Permission, Work with Respect, and Broadcast Recognition and Gratitude.(Daum, 2013)

Working together is something that cannot be avoided or talked around. You may dream all you want but its an inevitable in the work place. Instead of going against the tide work toward success in the workplace. Don’t fight it and remember:

Social Media: How I ‘hack’ it

Social media is just a platform. Twitter is a very simple and immediate broadcast platform. Facebook is a very personal, when it comes to friends and when it comes to fan pages, a little bit less but still somewhat personal way to communicate. (Brainy Quote, 2015)

I thought that for a change of pace that I would open my blog with a quote.

Social Media is not something that I wake up in the morning and think about. I do not tweet or post on Facebook even though I have accounts in both. It just became a thing that if you are my age you need to use. Peer pressure is something that I usually don’t bow towards but in this case it is something that must be done. Now that I have gone through most of my CAP 105 class and have talked about the good and the bad of social media, I can more easily reflect on its role in the world around me and my of use of it.

In the beginning

My role in the social media world was small. I had my Facebook account, which I used sparingly as something to check up on old high school friends and that was that. I was content with my knowledge that my world did not revolve around social media. Now though, going through this class I can honestly state that I was unprepared for the role it would play in my future. I never even had a Twitter account until I needed it for my CAP 105 class. Professionally, I used email as a source of information and how I communicated with others. Using social media never really occurred to me. Sure it was probably somewhere in the back of my mind but it never really popped out at me.

How others use social media

I have noticed that others in my generation use social media almost fanatically. They act like it is the Holy Grail itself and will solve all their problems. I would like to direct you to the quote below:

I would have to agree with the man. It seems that with everyone trying to know everything that it starts to lead to unneeded stress. This would be the “cost of caring”. We care so much about knowing everything about everyone we just stress ourselves out and that is not conducive to our health. In a report by the Pew Research Center the overall research stated that:

“The relationship between stress and social media use is indirect. It is the social uses of digital technologies, and the way they increase awareness of distressing events in others’ lives, that explains how the use of social media can result in users feeling more stress.”(Hampton, Raine, Lu, Shin, & Purcell, 2015)

This is what I see in other people and it honestly stresses me out sometimes. The cycle continues.

Where I am now

Now I can say that due to my increased awareness of social media thanks to this class I am honestly more prepared to face the world. I may not have used social media to my advantage before but I’m starting now. Social media, even though I think it is a pain in the ass most of the times, is useful. It all depends on how you use it though. It’s time to get smart.

The ‘How To’ of the Infographic

Infographics are used to creatively demonstrate something, whether they be statistics or step by step instructions. Content is created through websites like canva.com (which I used) or picktochart.com. The one I made was for the statistics of the 2014 Black Friday. Content is shared through social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Infographics are very useful in displaying information for easier reading.

Social Media: A Curse or a Blessing?

It started with an idea. That’s what everything starts out as; one idea that soon spreads and becomes something more. It spreads not unlike a virus and is now something that will not be going away anytime soon. Like a cockroach or maybe a fungus it’s here to stay. That’s what social media is; at least that’s what I believe. What with Facebook, twitter, Instagram, and every other type of social media platform out there, the world is expanding. Social media though is a lot more than just a platform for communication. It is a part of life, something that is there for convenience and a way to keep people entertained. True it is used for business purposes but it’s also used to spread news, to watch an upcoming video, to see who is dating who, and etc. Social media as a whole encompasses an entirety of different thoughts and actions. As to whether this is good for our generation and future generations, well that is still up for debate. These are my thoughts on what social media is and its impact on society.

I as a person do not use social media as other people in my age group due. Call me old fashioned but I don’t believe that the world revolves around social media but then again I’m just inherently lazy and don’t check what is posted daily. If I do use social media I usually use Facebook just to see how old classmates are doing. I only just got a twitter account this semester and that was just because it’s a requirement for the class. I do use YouTube frequently but just for entertainment. I don’t use social media for business purposes and I’m starting to think after taking a course that revolves around technology in the world that I need to pay more attention to it. Facebook for example, is used now more as a platform for targeted ads for businesses who for every ‘like’ they get on their page get their own self-promoter for their product. It’s good business sense and is something that I need to be aware of (Noor Al-Deen, Hana, Hendricks, p.147).

What I have noticed around me is that people use social media the most as a platform to post pictures and posts about their life. Class can just about to start and I see girls sending that final message or just post random photos of themselves like it is the most important thing in the world. This I think impacts learning as studies have shown that “by using social media in the classroom it encourages students to develop connections with peers and reinforce the collaborative nature of learning”(Gonzales, 2015). I can’t see how it is but apparently it is very important. I think that the entertainment factor is what appeals the most to people my age that makes the social media platforms so popular. The personal benefits to myself are that I use it for entertainment purposes when I’m bored. This is mostly with YouTube though but I do use Facebook to check on old schoolmates.

Overall the use of Social Media has changed society into a more communicative one through these platforms. While some believe that this has improved society I believe that it has made us more vulnerable. With everything online these days it means that anything said online stays online whether you delete it or not (Mashhadi, 2015). Someone can still see what you said and this can impact you as a person. Whether this is good or bad is up for debate but we have become extremely self-reliant on these social media platforms. I won’t lie, I’m guilty of this but luckily I know how to regulate myself otherwise I would never get anything done. I haven’t decided if this is a curse or blessing truthfully. As it is, it’s all a matter of opinion really. I don’t think we’ll really know until years in the future.
